Response
Ah. A respected friend quite nicely asked my opinions on certain other employment situations:
If I opened up a vegan/vegetarian/healthfood store, would I want to hire a meat-eater, especially knowing they would be vocal about their views?
Well, I don't think it's appropriate to be vocal about your personal views on the job. If the meat-eater was vociferous enough that he was driving away customers, he should be fired.
If I found out he was eating porkchops for dinner at home, I would not have a right to fire him.
If C28 hired a homosexual and that person chose to make out with his/her partner at work, that person should be fired. If that person wants a job, and believes in God, and is willing to pray with customers like C28 requires, I don't think what they do at home is the employer's business.
Borrowing from an America's Next Top Model episode: FUBU does not have the right to refuse to hire caucasians, neither does Abercrombie & Fitch have the right to refuse to hire African Americans.
Refusing to hire someone based on anything not having to do with the job requirements should not be legal. Firing someone for what they do at home should not be legal.
And in California, it's not.

California DOES have a law!
California state law prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation in the areas of employment, public accommodation and private and public employment. Sexual orientation discrimination in housing accommodation and employment is specifically addressed in the Cal Gov Code § 12920 (2001). Employment discrimination is also addressed in Cal Gov. Code § 12940 (2001). Sexual orientation is not specifically addressed in the California public accommodation law, the Unruh Civil Rights Act. Cal Civ Code § 51 (2001). California courts, however, have construed the code to include sexual orientation as a prohibited basis for discrimination.

This is stupid.
I just wrote an entry where I questioned whether it was legal to prohibit homosexuals from being hired, or legal to fire someone for being homosexual.
I guess it is: No federal law prevents a person from being fired or refused a job on the basis of sexual orientation.
That kind of makes my blood boil.

vote vote vote vote vote
A lot of people at my work did not vote, including my officemate (who was a strong anti-Bush person, but still, not registered). I think the next election (local, not four years from now) I'm going to get these people registered. I'll even go door to door in my neighborhood if I have to. It's not just a matter of getting democrats registered, I just think everyone should be.
Anyway, I told officemate I'll get her registered and show her how to vote absentee.
It wouldn't have mattered this election - California voted Kerry anyway - but at least I can get more people involved. I mean really, this is a small thing we all can do.

Just give me a BREAK already!
Okay, I managed to get through studying the debates with only a minor stomach ulcer. My favorite comment?
Bush: "Our health care system is the envy of the world!"
Uh... wha-? It is?
Anyone want to comment on this? Itsy? Canadians? Australians?
