Hate's last stand
A very interesting article by Mark Morford in SF Gate
"...because they cannot understand it, they fear it. And because they fear it, they do as paranoid, fear-based religions have done since the dawn of a man-made God: They try to kill it."
"...But here's the tragic part: They don't really know why they're panicking. They don't really know what the threat is, exactly. Except for the loss of their own power. And control. And cultural relevance. Besides that, I mean."
"...But they do know one thing: If California goes all-in for marriage equality, it's a slippery slope indeed until other states eventually follow suit, and before you know it the entire country will have to let love in and recognize scary gay people as valid Americans -- you know, just like we did not so long ago for those awful black people."

Proposition 8
"I'm calling tonight to inform you that marriage is under attack and we have an opportunity to protect it. I'm hoping I can count on your Yes on 8 vote."
So says the voice mail. The polls now are "too close to call", with Yes votes gaining ground. It's depressing me again. I don't want to see my daughter's face if this proposition wins - both kids are so excited about the vote this year, ALL the issues, and it's a rough lesson when an important vote goes the wrong way.
I don't understand how "marriage is under attack". Aren't we already making a mockery of marriage? I mean we straight people, haven't we done much more than actually fight for the right to love each other? We run back and forth to Las Vegas where we can marry and divorce at will. We fill out our prenuptial agreements. We celebrate 16 year old Jamie Lynn Spears getting engaged to her 18 year old boyfriend after getting pregnant. Teenage Bristol Palin is applauded for getting engaged after getting pregnant. Are the Yes on 8 people fighting also for women's rights, against domestic violence, for education so the poor uneducated population have understanding for and access to birth control?
No. No, very few people are caring about heterosexual domestic issues, and the 50% heterosexual divorce rate, the ease with which straight people can marry and divorce. They just want to stop people who love each other and are willing to fight for their love from actually having the chance at making marriage a celebrated, important event. It's a THROWAWAY event to many straight people. We don't take it seriously any more. Until someone else wants a shot at making it work. Are you afraid same sex couples will out do us in the success rate? If not, why do you care?
"I could give a fuck what they do," said a friend recently. I lost it. I blew my top. You "could give a fuck" but you'll take the time to vote against their right to marriage?
I know many of my readers don't even live in California. But some of you do, and the rest of you may have the same vote come up in your state. If it does, whether you're voting now or in the future, please give a vote for people who want to love each other. The ability to love is not an attack on marriage. It's a celebration. So celebrate it already!

Caught up!
It's Monday morning and I'm actually about 110% on track with all three of my classes - pretty amazing! The next two months will be spent writing three very long, difficult papers, but hopefully I can get through it.
And it's off to school for now.

Eleventh Hour = Joke
oh, whatEVER.
Good Grief, is this show set in 1985?? That's the last time I saw orchards and any wide open space in San Jose. The cherry orchards by Evergreen College had houses built over them years ago. I believe the Mirassou Winery up the street closed up shop even before that.
~~~side track story: I went to school with some of the Mirassou kids, not the brightest bulbs in the pack, and I think even if someone from the family reads this they'll have to agree... I notice their website does not list the guy I went to school with under "family tradition". I worried about the winery's future even back in junior high.
At any rate, that was NOT San Jose you saw on that show. And "Maple Valley Hospital"??? Does not exist and is a ridiculous name for a SJ hospital. We don't grow maples here. If you're going to make up a hospital name call it "Prune Valley" or "Apricot Valley" or even, (ooh, here's an original idea), "SILICON VALLEY" hospital. Because the only thing we grow here now is computer chips. Even the aerial view was of some farm town and NOT the city that GROWS YOUR COMPUTERS and YOUR GOOGLE PHONES and your iPODS and ALL YOUR VIDEO GAMES.
I found this all very strange. I would not have expected them to actually film here, but couldn't you find scenery or sets that actually looked like San Jose? Would they film an episode in Okalahoma City and call it Miami or New York? San Jose does not have farms. We have farms in nearby towns, we USED to have farms, we no longer have farms. We have a lot of McMansions and a lot of matching empty High-Tech Buildings.
We don't have vineyards.
Eleventh Hour = Stupid.
Cynthia = Proud of her City.
Eleventh Hour - TV show
I just watched the preview for tonight's episode of Eleventh Hour, a show I have never seen but will watch tonight. Because the preview states the episode is about a food-poisoned man in "San Jose, California" and then they proceed to show scenes taking place somewhere no where near San Jose. I didn't really even recognize the hills as being anywhere near here. I mean... is San Jose really known for vineyards? In the middle of nowhere? So we're going to watch it and see if the characters actually travel to other places. If they don't, if they really are going to claim they're in San Jose... Well, they are big fat liars.
(Spike just saw it and said "Why are they even setting something in San Jose anyway? It's probably about some crazy computer geek person. That's the only thing that makes sense." So, kudos, producers of Eleventh Hour - you're going to have at least two new viewers tonight.)
At least it looks like a good show! Anyone else seen this show?
Salmon Rushdie's Midnight's Children
For the next two weeks in my Global Understanding: Literature of Southeast Asia class we are studying Midnight's Children by Salmon Rushdie.. I FREAKIN' LOVE this book. It still involves the partitioning of India, a subject I will be happy to never revisit again after this semester, but I LOVE his writing. I would definitely try another book by Rushdie if they are all like this.
Has anyone else read something by Rushdie? Did you like it? I am curious to know if the other books are written in the same way - and also if I'm just the crazy one for loving this one so much. But I really really do love it. If you haven't read it? I recommend giving it a try.
Three years ago today
Today is the three year anniversary of my mother's death. I'm just having a quiet day, don't want to talk much, just want to quietly meditate with my family.
But I got a gift today.
Do you remember Pischina's Big Give? When you all helped me raise enough money to wipe out the gas/electric bill of a stranger I had been helping? I had not heard from her since her husband's death. I received this note from her today:
I am Karen, the fortunate person. I just happened to be searching my name on Google and found this. I can't thank everyone enough for the help you gave me. At that time you can't imagine what a difference it made to me. I was overwhelmed with emotion. The heat was to be turned off the next day, and you rescued me from my debt and kept me warm by paying my accumulated utility bill. What a wonderful gift I shall never ever forget. Thank you thank you thank you all. It is so so wonderful to know that there are such kind and caring people in the world! Love to you all. Karen
I needed to share this with you all. Especially on this day. My mother died on this day, but the inheritance I received allowed me to have a positive effect on Karen's life. And when I could no longer do it myself, you all finished it for me. I just wanted to make sure that all of you who helped me do this, even those who were only able to send good thoughts, know that what you did made a big difference. It makes me happy on this sad day to know that certain good things came about. Is it a coincidence that I hear from her, that she finds me, after all this time, on the anniversary of my mother's death? A coincidence is hard even for me to believe.
Blah-ness.
It's been a stressful, unproductive weekend and I can't wait for Wednesday, my last due date, to be over.
I finished one essay, made good progress on another, made minimal progress on the third, am behind on my reading, and am generally disappointed in myself and the work that I did not do.
I also read the most horrific, depressing bunch of short stories from my Global Understanding: Literature of India class. It's no wonder the US doesn't spend much time teaching the history of India, kids would go home crying every day and having nightmares every night.
I didn't get any graduate work done. This sucks big time. And I'm going to have to cut class tomorrow to get my Honors essay completed.
Proposition 8 was annoying the heck out of me, now it's frustrating the crap out of me. I came across a bunch of comments about it from Pro Prop 8 people - and I just don't get it. I don't get how you can hate so much or be so apathetic towards the feelings and rights of other people, how you can throw up the Bible and your religion to take away rights. And feel good about it, feel proud of yourself. How you can blatantly lie in your television ads. A friend of mine on Facebook sent a congratulatory note to her recently married friend, and a wedding pic was on the site. I looked at the excited, happy faces of the two brides and it just devastates me to think that we may take that away from them.
I read my Indian short stories and wonder how humans could have been so cruel to each other and then I watch what we do today. We're not chopping up human beings, but we're doing things just about as cruel, all in the name of, basically, religion.
I don't get it, I'm depressed from the short stories, I'm disappointed in my work, and I'm frustrated by all the ignorant people in the world. I need to go to bed now.
Palin on SNL
Did you all see Palin on SNL last night?
I did, and I didn't think she was funny or that good (except for her rocking out to her rap, that piece was pretty funny).
I would never choose my political candidate by who's the funniest, but other political figures have come on the show to poke fun at themselves and have come off as really funny and then at least someone you can relate too. Sarah Palin was stiff and without much humor, and made herself seem like she *wanted* to be a part of things, hang with the cool kids, but is really waaaaaay too uncool to blend in.
I don't know where I'm going with this. It really has nothing to do with my political views, and an SNL skit should never be something anyone bases their decisions on. I guess it just bothered me that she couldn't loosen up and have fun... Maybe that's it. In such a serious business as the candidates are in, I would hope they could step back and laugh at themselves or the predicaments they are in, even if they caused them. That makes them real people. It's not funny to just BE on SNL, it's only funny if we can laugh WITH you, and I didn't get the feeling that Palin knew how to laugh out loud.
Also, Alec Baldwin was terrible, heh.
What do you all think? Was she funny or not? Did it make you like her more, or did she disturb you more?
My vote is funny on the rap skit, but she didn't have anything to do in it, so that doesn't count. The rest was just kind of disturbing to me because it didn't seem like she got the humor. But I want to know what you think.
Or maybe I was just mad that Tina Fey had less air time last night, heh.
It's an essay weekend
This is going to be a not-fun weekend as I try to write three essays and read too many books.
Two essays will easily write themselves, but my Honors essay is not going well and I really should just forget about it until Sunday night when the pressure will be on to write SOMEthing.
My graduate reading sucks this weekend so there's that too.
To top it off, I had some crazy dream where my Honors professor (who borderline hates me) was playing footsie with me under the desk during class. GAHHH. Now I'm going to think about that when I'm in class.
The good news is that after this week I don't have any more writing due for a long time.
I have a feeling I'm going to spend a lot of time on the internet procrastinating this weekend.
Facebook Sudoku anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
My bad day at school
Sorry, I had not realized until I got Leslie's comment that I never told you all about my bad day at school last month.
I had a presentation due in my Honors Class and I was pretty confident about it, but as soon as I started the professor started ripping it apart. And he's kind of an asshole, personality-wise, so it was very... unreal, what was happening, and I got flustered and the presentation just went into the CRAPPER. UGH, it was the worst school day EVER. And half way through the presentation he told me, "No, keep going, it's just that your... exuberance... is disturbing."
I seriously wanted to DIE, hahaha. And after that day, NO ONE wanted to speak up in class. They all told me they had agreed with my presentation but didn't want to say anything against the professor - I was like, "thanks a LOT", hahaha.
Anyway, I scored lots of points with this one, so hopefully all is better. But I have an essay due next week, and I have a lot of work to do on it.
I ran!
I've been working really hard at the gym, in spite of how gentle the trainer wants to treat me (I even sneak extra weight onto the machines sometimes), and last Friday instead of walking for my warm-up I decided to run (since the trainer wasn't watching me).
And I DID run, and it felt GREAT. I only ran for about 7 minutes before the trainer got there and told me that "Walking is better for a warm up! Don't run!" But the good thing is he has been putting me on the Expresso Bike each Friday now and letting me run wild with it. So I finally feel that my cardio capacity is up.
So today I decided to get out and see just how far I can run.
Twice around the block = 1.6 miles. Took me 20 minutes with two walking sessions, but they were the shortest walking sessions ever, I was so surprised and proud of myself! I probably could have pushed for once more around the block, but I have barely gotten over my fear of dropping dead in the street from a heart attack and I didn't want to push that.
This is what I was hoping to gain from the trainer, if not a dramatic decrease in weight (hasn't happened, but I haven't gained any either) I wanted to at least get in shape enough that I wasn't going to be afraid to run on my own. I am finally there and I am so happy. The money for the trainer was definitely worth it now. And I still have two sessions left with him!
Tomorrow I have a drinking date with another student so no running, and Friday is back to the trainer. Hopefully I can get some running in this weekend. If I can manage time to run a few days a week, there won't be any stopping me!
School
Today was a good day.
Yesterday I had my presentation for my graduate class, it's about 25% of my grade and I'd been really nervous about it. But I was really calm the evening of class, and we just zipped through the 3-hour class. It's a seminar, so by "presentation" I mean I led the class through the discussion and had to have discussion questions and notes ready. It went well, the professor says she was impressed, that I had thoughtful and well-thought out discussions, and that it was the most I've talked in class all semester, combined.
I guess I've mostly been contributing to the discussions in my head, heh. I'll have to start using my out-loud voice from now on.
Anyway, it made me feel really good.
This morning I thought I had two presentations due in the same class (Honors Colloquium) but it turns out one isn't due until the end of the month. At least I'm ready for it already! But the one that was due went really well too, and I wasn't told I have "disturbing exuberance" this time, so that was a plus. That class is going much better than it was before.
Now I have another 100 pages to read and a reader response to write for tomorrow morning. At that point I will finally be caught up with all my classes.
Except now there's a 1500 word paper due on Tuesday, so this weekend will be shot doing that, and I'll go back to being behind again.
Just another average week in a student's life!
Movies: In Bruges and Appaloosa
Friday I get to Aptos and Scott wants to go see "Appaloosa" which I had never heard of, at all. I looked it up on the computer and it's a frikkin WESTERN. I tell him, "Hello, you go see "Burn After Reading" without me and now you want to take me to another stupid western?????"
We stayed in and watched a dvd of "In Bruges" instead.
Wow.
!!!
I loved it, Scott loved it, and we both loved Colin Farrell. I cannot believe I didn't see this movie earlier. It's probably one of my top ten favorite movies EVER. I was hooked as soon as the voiceover started in the first minute, but within 5 minutes Colin utters these words (in his heavy Irish accent): "Ken, I grew up in Dublin. I love Dublin. If I grew up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me but I didn't, so it doesn't."
And you have to actually hear him say it, but I was in LOVE with the movie from that point on. This is a movie you could spend the rest of your life quoting.
Excellent. Just Excellent.
So then I relented and went to see "Appaloosa" with Scott on Saturday evening. And you know what? That was a really good movie. I have to hand it to them, the plot was different than any I had ever seen before, and that's saying something. I'm not even going to tell you what it is, but this was the craziest "love story" I have ever seen. For a western, the bad-guy plot was incidental - it was the whole "What the FUCK are they going to do with that woman???" part that held your interest. Of course, Ed Harris, Viggo Mortenson and Jeremy Irons were the stars and Viggo especially held MY interest. Renee Zellweger was a big bucket of ugly in this movie, far as I could tell, but she played her part hilariously. And the ending? Was PERFECT.
I left with a smile on my face, and very happy to see it. I've never seen one preview for this movie and it's only playing on one theater over here - but if you can see this in your town, I definitely recommend it.
Buffy is a Water Polo Super Star
I went to Buffy's water polo game yesterday and it was SO exciting!!!
Despite all her goals, her team has not yet won a game, but yesterday the fourth period ended in a tie of 10-10 (a super high score for water polo) and they did lose in overtime 12-13, but it was SO exciting, and Buffy was an absolute star!
She scored 6 of those points, everyone in the audience knew who #17 was and were yelling for her, and during a time-out we could hear the coach telling her "We're going to pass the ball to you and you only, and you shoot and score! That's all I want you to do, get that ball and score a goal! You understand me Buffy? You're the one! You're going to go score some more points!"
Even though they lost, the team looked super happy when it was over, and Buffy was just beyond proud of herself. She wants to join league water polo in the winter so she can get even better, and she's starting to look forward to getting a scholarship. There's no doubt that colleges would want her for their team, she absolutely stood out among both teams as the superstar.
AND she's passing all her classes and doing the best she can in school. I've even seen some of her competitiveness come out in her classes - she doesn't want anyone getting a better grade than hers on their tests. It's nice to see her not only turning her life around, but finally enjoying the good things in life that come when you try your best.
I'm proud of her, can you tell?
Frustration at work today
I think I need to get into Technical Writing just to save the world from processes like the ones which are given to us at my job.
I was taught to write processes by someone who was always VERY PICKY and tough on us, and refused to accept anything but perfection and the very simplest and easiest to understand processes. And you know what? My processes are good. Anyone can pick up my processes and follow along. And that is how a process SHOULD BE.
Sorry, just venting about something you all don't know, but I had to get it out or I'm going to scream at someone if I don't get it out.
The beloved Expresso Bike
I forgot to mention that when I went to the gym today there was a big sign by the front door saying "Our dryer is broken, we have NO TOWELS, sorry for the inconvenience". So by the time I was done with my seven miles I was soaked like SpongeBob and couldn't wait to get to the bathroom to rinse off. Nothing was going to stop me from riding that bike though!
I presented my "save money on gas to the gym and make the bike worth it" speech to Spike, who shot back with a "But that calculation relies on you going to the gym every single day, all year long, or 2-1/2 years every single day to be exact. Right?"
Darn kids and their critical thinking skills and their common sense. He did reply to my scowl with a "Just GET IT ALREADY" though, said with the emphasis of one who does not want to hear about the damn $5000 bike anymore.
Buffy appears to be the only one with real common sense, though true to form, only because she thinks it will affect HER. "$5000 is probably going to come right out of my college fund! NO! You're NOT buying that bike!"
Nice to see she's finally so concerned about her education, heh.
And now I go to bed.
Lost: Two Pounds!
I could not stop myself from going to the gym today so I could get back on that bike. I don't understand why I never see anyone else in the gym using these bikes, maybe they don't know how to work them? I rode for seven miles in 30 minutes and chose a silver medal course, Farmers Bluff. It was all along ocean cliffs with little sheep grazing on the side of the road. I would happily find time to get to the gym every day just to ride that bike. The drawback - I have a 22 mile round trip drive to the gym.
So that means if I actually had one at my house I would be saving 8030 miles of driving per year. Which is $1,285 in gas a year. So the bike would be paid for in gas savings in 2.5 years.
NONONONONONONONONO!!!!! Stop thinking about it!!!! Not going to happen!!!
Friends do not let friends spend $5000 on a bike!!!
Ohmygosh I'm going to disown every one of you people who encourage me to buy that bike. Do you not know that I WILL buy that bike if someone doesn't tell me NO????? This is not a solid investment... well, except I would ride it every day, probably multiple times a day, and the kids would probably ride it too, and it's a pretty sturdy, well built item, so it definitely feels like it would last over the years, and it's totally cool and fun, and you can race other real people when you hook it up to the internet, and it's better than a bike in that you don't have to wear a helmet and it never rains and you would never hit a rock and fly over the handlebars.
NO! NO NO NO!!!!!! LALALALALALALALAALALNOTLISTENING....
In other news, I love anything that brings Angel and Kim out of hiding and into my comments section. Plus, they're backing me up that I called dibs on Tina Fey before any of you all cared about her. NYAAH! She's MINE!!!!!
Bad friends! BAD!!
So I ask you people to STOP me from spending $5000 on a piece of exercise equipment and instead, "That's so cool," says Angel and "Do it" says Itsy.
So I tell Spike about it and tell him it costs $5000 and he says "Is it cool?" and I said "It's AWEsome!" and he says "Get it!"
Bad, Bad Friends. And son.
When I call my financial manager to get the money out I'm giving him all of your names! "Don't blame me... Blame Angel and Itsy! They MADE me do it!"
I want I want I want
My YMCA got a couple Expresso Bikes and they are absolutely awesome. The video courses are so cool you actually feel like you're really riding the course and I've had three fantastic and difficult workouts on them so far. I usually HATE stationary bikes as they are NOTHING like a real bike ride, but these are actually awesome.
I want one for my own house so bad I can taste it.
But at $5000 each... someone make sure I don't do it, okay?
OJ in jail - finally.
It's somewhat poetic justice that even though this guilty verdict came in "13 years to the day after Simpson was cleared of murdering his ex-wife and a friend of hers", it barely made the news. Nobody cares about OJ anymore and that's probably for the best, he isn't deserving of any attention. I watched several different news shows today and it was not until I accidentally saw a blurb on Yahoo that I learned about the guilty verdict and that OJ could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Who says the news is always depressing?
Infestation
So recently I've noticed these very wierd bugs showing up around the house. A few in the kitchen, a few in the family room, and many on the dining room table (which we rarely use to eat on). It was only a couple over the last couple days but today all of the sudden they seemed to show up every time I turned around.
I wondered if it was because our vacuum is broken again, and about three weeks behind in vacuuming with a little cat hair piling up - were these bugs living in the little dust puffs? I had never seen any bug like this before - kind of like a very skinny winged termite, but sort of like an ant, or a gnat, but not exactly. Ya know? haha...
So I looked up insect pictures on the internet, there are actual sites where you can go to identify the bugs you find in your house! I saw many many many bugs... enough to make me feel a little sick and a lot itchy, but none that came even close to the little bugs I'm finding.
Spike came in and sat down to eat at the table, so I told him to watch out for the bugs which he said he had not noticed before (he also hasn't noticed that he hasn't cleaned his bathroom in three weeks, so there ya go). It didn't take long before we found one and while he looked to see if he could identify it I looked around again to see where they might be coming from.
Suddenly, I spotted the culprit.
The brand new bag of new-brand bird food that Spike had bought for Fiona was sitting on the table. With one of the bugs right on top of it.
Gross.
That's one downside of bird food, I have found that 9.5 out of 10 bags usually have bugs included, and usually I check them before I open them, but Spike has been in charge of the bird recently so I never even suspected. So the bag is getting tossed, we're probably going to bug-bomb the house Saturday just to make sure whatever this bug is ends up dead dead dead, and then I'll have to go find another new brand of bird food. The pet store doesn't carry the non-bug-filled pellets that we've always fed her, so we're searching for something new.
But a bug-free ingredient list is going to be imperative.
So it could have been worse, but I didn't hear anything that would make me want to vote for Palin or her Grampa McCain. What bothered me the most was listening to the pundits afterward RAVING over her because... get this... she "successfully avoided questions" that she didn't want to answer.
I know this is a skill that all debaters are taught, but it's one of those things that I hate about election seasons. Okay, if I was the manager of a debater I would want one who could dance around like that, but when I am choosing a candidate for a VERY IMPORTANT JOB I would like that person to successfully ANSWER THE QUESTION. Not have a skill in avoiding it.
I mean, jeeez, I get enough of that skill from my kids.
The other thing that has bothered me since GW Bush's debate four years ago is the down home, good ole boy/gal talk. "Oh my gosh" and "I'm tellin' ya" and "Holy moly" or whatever the hell else she said, those phrases not only do not impress me, they strike me as entirely unprofessional, something you would never EVER be coached to say in a real job interview. But GWB worked it to his advantage and it's about the only thing Palin has going for her. I would hope that Americans would be smarter than this, but time will only tell.
Palin took Biden off guard when she asked him if she could call him "Joe", and he politely accepted but chose to refer to her as "Governor" which is the PROPER WAY to refer to someone in her position. It would have been outrageous for Biden to refer to her as "Sarah" during the debate. By calling Biden "Joe" throughout the debate she was very disrespectful in an inappropriate situation - I would hope she would not do this with Heads of State or other world leaders if she were elected to office.
I was pretty disgusted by the "Joe Six-Pack" and NUMEROUS "Hockey Mom" references too. Most of the people I associate with are not "Joe Six-Pack" and I am FAR from a Hockey Mom, so what the hell are you going to do for ME? Hockey Moms across America may or may not love Palin, but there are plenty more women out here who do not relate.
So... Yay for Palin, I guess, she earned her debater's badge. Did she earn my vote? Not in a million years.
