So this morning I checked the checking account balance, because what with all the school clothes shopping for the kids I had a feeling I was close to 0 in that account.

Yes, I was below zero, and had SEVEN $34 overdraft fees.

So I call Wells Fargo to find out how I can have SEVEN $34 overdraft fees when my savings account has five digits of cash in it.

Well that's because when they switched me to that Super Special Account when I deposited all the money, that account they told me would have the same account number so I wouldn't have to worry about all my bills that automatically come out of my account which was a big fat LIE because they DID change the number and I got calls every day for a month about my card being declined...

Well, when they switched me to that Super Special Account, I didn't request to have overdraft protection.

What the FUCK kind of shit is that, I asked.

"Well. You have to ASK for overdraft protection if you want it."

"I had it PREVIOUSLY. I didn't know I had to ask for it when you switched me to the Super Special Account. Was I also supposed to request that I receive interest on my Savings? Is that also an option you give?"

"Well. We can't decide what you want us to do with your money. We don't know that you want us to transfer funds if you don't tell us to."

Me: So you are telling me that Wells Fargo thinks that I would rather pay you almost $250 in fees instead of transfering $125 from a savings account that has tens of thousands of dollars in it? Money that I gave to YOU to hold on to? Does that make sense to you?

Him: Um. Well, no. But ma'am...

It went on. I got put on hold. Then he came back and told me I WAS GOING TO RECEIVE FIVE MORE OVERDRAFT FEES THIS EVENING. All for little $5 and $7 debit card charges at Starbucks and McDonalds. I started to have a stinking fit on the phone so I got put on hold again. He came back and said they were going to take off 6 of the 7 fees (but I was still going to receive the five others) and he would sign me up for overdraft protection right now. Big fat lot of good that does me.

I haven't had to deal with stupid shit from WF in a long time, but they always come up with something. I think it's very funny that I had overdraft protection on my account when I had a continuing balance of zero dollars, but the minute I actually give them a good deal of my money all of a sudden I have no overdraft protection. As soon as I have a chance I'll be going inside the bank to get the rest of those charges taken off. But there's not much else I can do - I've had the Wells Fargo account for 20 years - it would be a huge pain in the ass to switch banks, and they know it.

I hate WF almost as much as you do and for the same reasons too. I got hit with a bunch of overdraft fees when a Paypal/iTunes error caused me to be overcharged.

Since then I put 200 in my checking account and wiped it off the ledger. Now I always know I've got a 200 buffer in case something like that happens again. I know its too late for you but just something to think about.

I know you said you don't want to switch banks but if you don't have your money locked into anything... you should consider wamu.. they have an excellent online savings with almost 5% interest.. I also just opened an online cd also (only 6 months) which is like 5 and a half..

ok, that's the end of my Washington Mutual promotion : ) ...

I think I remember you saying you have a money guy so maybe your getting a better interest rate then that already but if not, something to consider anyway..

Here's what I do - I have my banking info available online. That way I can take a look at it easily every day when I am online (reading blogs - heh).

The other thing I have done - I have a Visa that gives me miles, (as well as an automatic annual $50 airline companion pass that we use for our February Mexico trip every year).

I put EVERYTHING I can on that card - groceries, gasoline, shopping for clothes, books, online purchases, restaurants, Peet's, PG&E, AT&T, ComCast, my auto and homeowners insurance, etc. etc.

Then I ALWAYS pay the credit card off every month so I NEVER have any interest charges - it's only a deal if you never pay interest - so far we have traveled cross country twice on our miles (first class once!), and now we have enough miles for Europe or South America next year (not sure which we want to do).

The best part is that I hardly ever write checks out of the checking account - maybe three or four a month (too bad the mortgage company won't let me use the Visa!).

Yesterday I noticed an incorrect fee charged against my checking
account balance. I phoned the Wells Fargo customer service people and
ended up speaking with a customer service rep in Ft. Worth, Texas. I
live in Austin. She was of no help so I asked for her supervisor. The
supervsor named Melody was worse yet. She was rude and never let me
talk and raised my blood pressure to where I was driven to profanity.
I hung up on her. I then called back and got a Customer Service rep in
the Minn. office for Wells Fargo. He fixed the problem and credited my
checking account on the spot.

5 hours later I went to use my ATM card and it did not work. I phoned
wells fargo and a lady named Jenny informed me it had been terminated
and a new card had been requsted. A few more calls to Wells Fargo got
them to admit that a lady named Melody had done this to me. She had
cancellled my card as an act of revenge against me. She must have
monitored my account and seen that the funds were credited. They
warned me to check my credit report because she may have stolen my SS#
as well. They are now sending me a new ATM card with which will take 7
days.

I am contacting an attorney tomorrow.

I know what happened. It's a simple account conversion, but sounds like the banker was looking for sales numbers and created a whole new account causing all the problems. That's the problem with WFB. A lot of bankers are thinking about their sales
numbers and not the customer. I see it all the time I work for them and am a top banker in my region cause I never dick anyone over. My manager is in the hot seat right now because of something similar to this that we reported to the ethics dept. =)

Around four years ago I was caught by a scam -- whatever you call it -- where they put a gadget in front of the atm card reader and get your pin with a camera. All transmitted to a van nearby. I was a yokel not to carefully always hide the PIN.
I call WF fraud and in brief he said: If you never gave your card and your pin number to someone else then YOU took that money out. i.e. I was trying to scam the bank. Well, my teller at my branch later said that such ATM deals were not uncommon. (and more so now) She showed me on the internet how it was done. My fault being a retired programmer and a daily internet user,to be simply unaware of it. Me! trying to scam Wells Fargo! That's a laugh. Projection on their part I say. And fo course in addition to the $900 or so stolen I had easily some $200 In overdraft fees. When on the road I don't check my account often enough. I sure do now! And if I can ever afford to be in CA again I will take whatever tije required to get as far separated from that theiving bank as possible. Wamu is my present choice. watch your account. Daily. james

Yes they do suck. I tried to get a "Streamlined" home refinance starting Sept 2009. They told me that no expense to me and minimal paperwork they would have me refinanced in 6 to 8 weeks. Well, lie lie lie. After 8 weeks they demanded I pay for an appraisal (so much for no cost to me). Then, when they didn't like the appraisal (too high) they demanded ANOTHER appraisal, (also at my expense), and road maintenance agreement with all my neighbors. Where is the class action suit! ALL banks are bad. It's the banks that have stolen the Middle classes money then requested the bailout pay and they have that too.

I no longer have credit. I am not anyone's or any company's bitch!

I would rather be poor or living under my means then become a slave to the banks!
