Horrible sight
So I was driving home today and lots of police cars were whizzing past with their sirens blasting, and they just kept on passing me heading in the direction of my house. I thought of calling Buffy to make sure that she and her friend, who had stayed home for 15 minutes alone, had not done something like blow the house to smithereens while I was gone, but decided that probably it wasn't my house they were going to.
And I got closer to my neighborhood and I could see where all the cops had stopped, right in the street around the shopping center where our Starbucks is. There were about 15 cop cars all blocking the northbound lane, and two fire engines and an ambulance and I could see a white car. There were cops in the street everywhere so we all had to drive extra slow past the accident. So I see the white car, which doesn't really look smashed, and some really upset looking people sitting on a curb talking to some cops, but I couldn't see any other car...
And then I saw the blanket
In the street
The yellow tarb just lieing in the street with an upturned hand sticking out one side.
It was pretty obvious that someone had run across that freakin road (speed limit 40mph) in the dark, and gotten hit by the white car. I looked in the parking lot and saw about twenty teens in a crowd looking FREAKED, and adult bystanders everywhere, also looking freaked, and I saw the yellow blanket, and got sick to my stomach and reached for my cell phone.
Buffy and her friend were indeed at my house, and I knew Spike was far far away - but that's our shopping center, that's where I spend a great deal of my life studying at Starbucks, that's where the kids hang out at McDonalds, that's where Scott and I eat at two different restaurants, that's our drug store and our bank and our bakery. That's where all the kids hang out. There was a good chance it was someone we knew, and I didn't like the size of the teenage crowd - I just kept thinking please please please don't let it be a kid.
After getting home and telling Buffy what happened I had to drive right past it again to drive her friend home, and after Buffy asked, decided to run to Starbucks really quickly to get something. Buffy really wanted to see what happened so I gave her 30 seconds to get her fill. I didn't want her to think it was appropriate to stare at things like that, but I didn't think it would hurt her to get a dose of life's reality - something Buffy just does not have.
She came back and said she heard it was a lady from the retirement care center across the street. One of the residents had come to identify the body, and was crying that she had told the lady not to cross there.
Why an old lady would decide to cross San Felipe Road in the dark, much less EVER, when there's a lighted intersection 50 feet further down, I will never understand.
I was glad it wasn't a kid, I was glad it wasn't someone my kids knew. I'm glad it's not someone who works at the shopping center, who I might know. I'm really really sorry for the lady and her family, and I probably feel even worse for the poor girls who hit her with their car. I fill sick to my stomache all day long if I hit a bird or small animal in my car, I can't imagine hitting and killing an actual person.
So that's what happened today. I didn't go to Cinequest because I needed to do my Archaeology paper (on Otzi, the frozen man from the Italian alps - exciting, no?) and we'll be there all weekend.
For gosh sakes everyone drive safely and DON'T CROSS A FAST ROAD IN THE DARK.

I am so enjoying all your reviews! It's like getting a contact high reading your enthusiastic takes on the films ... thank you! I linked your journal to David Munro after you previewed "Full Grown Men" - he thanked me. We saw it last Sunday, and I actually had a similar take on it - had anticipated more of a comedy, even though my sister had seen it at the Tribeca FF in new York last year , liked it, and had mentioned it was more serious than a straight-on comedy (I forgot she had said that to me). Anyway - just wanted to let you know how much I have been enjoying your movie-news --- and also how happy I am that your life is going well. You deserve all good things ahead, especially since you appreciate them so richly and you never forget the lessons learned in hard times.
Where I live there is an intersection right at the front of my house (a busy one) and I see folks crossing the street behind my house all the time. It's only a few feet away (not sure of the distance but I do know my house isn't too long) and these folks can't be bothered to actually cross at the light. They either cross before or after they hit it.
A few years ago I saw a woman get hit by a car in the dark on an icy night. She was crossing behind my house. It was horrible. The kids saw it. She lived but she had a broken hip and several cracked ribs. All the bystanders wanted the driver charged, instead she did - with Jay walking.
Cross at the light folks. Is your life really worth a few more mintues??
