This weekend was mostly
This weekend was mostly spent (after I dyed my hair purple and we saw Kill Bill) going to Open Studios. This is where you look at a huge map of the Santa Cruz area where hundreds of artists live and the artists open their homes to you so you can come see their work.
Literally hundreds, so since Scott has a woodshop and is very into that sort of thing, we picked out all the wood and furniture artists. All the artists were really nice, and some were very interesting. Some even served wine and cheese and crackers, apples fresh from the farm next door, m&m's, fresh garden tomatoes, etc.
We saw everything from a man who was charging $1200 for a little jewelry box to a lady who pounded layers of copper onto garage sale furniture, to a guy who had a barn filled with industrial size woodworking tools yet all he made was $200 FISHING NETS ("Well I haven't sold any yet, quit my day job last year and pretty much used up my life savings.")
Then we saw Matthew Werner's furniture which was very beautiful, waaaaaaaaaaay more beautiful than the pictures can show, yet again, $175 for a napkin holder, and his music stands, though absolutely gorgeous, were $1200 and up.
But our highlight of the weekend was meeting Mr. Vern Bowie who made the most gorgeous furniture I've ever seen. I can't find a better link to him which is really too bad cuz this guy was amazing. And just such a great guy! His wife is a painter too (scroll down in that link for a painting she did of him, and her photo). He's 73 and looks about 50. African American with the most delicious chocolate colored skin, his wife and he ran their own business PLUS 3 restaurants during their life, then made enough to retire and they make enough doing what they love to live a very nice life. Beautiful house, beautiful furniture and artwork too of course.
We left that house just in love with the couple, I swear Scott wants to invite them to dinner and make them our friends.
I wouldn't mind a bit either.
